About the Role

The Communications Manager is responsible for developing, implementing, and managing the communications, marketing and media strategy for all Association programs and services, in close collaboration with other key staff. Overseeing all communications materials, the Communications Manager will be the brand champion, taking a lead role in brand standard management and ensuring that a focus on brand evolution is an association priority.
The Communications Manager reports to the Director of Operations with a Dotted Line reporting to CEO specifically for media relations. Works with other staff as required.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Communications
• Support the CEO’s communications including writing speeches, opinion pieces, letters, power point presentations and Messages to Members.
• Responsible for setting tone for all BCHA communications including editing internal and external communications, some examples include annual report, and web content, ensuring BCHA.com is the go-to source for industry.
• Manage the editorial content, edit all articles, for our weekly newsletter and additional communications as required.
• Manage editorial content and publishing deadlines for our BCHA Summit Magazine and Innfocus Magazine.
• Support Advocacy communications, including drafting government letters, government relations policies, and crafting communications briefs for industry stakeholders.
• Responsible for quarterly board meeting presentation slide deck.
Marketing
• While maintaining the appropriate level of professionalism, grows the digital presence of the BC Hotel Association, including but not limited to website and social media channels.
• Anticipates, reacts, and introduces new programs and initiatives to meet member’s needs.
• Creates and manage marketing plans for association events in collaboration with other association leads.
• Creates and executes marketing materials for all BCHA events, including the BCHA Summit.
• Manage paid advertising placements such as E-blasts and web advertising.
Media Relations
• Advise, consult with and support President & CEO and BCHA board, with media relations strategy for advocacy and industry development.
• Create and distribute all media materials, producing media releases, pitches, key messaging, positioning statements, bios etc.
• Prepare, edit, and distribute media advisories and invitations for BC Hotel Association events and announcements.
• Act as the main media contact for the BC Hotel Association, maintaining and nurturing important media relationships to drive media coverage, while establishing and maintaining targeted media lists.
Miscellaneous:
• Attend board, foundation, strategic planning, assigned committee meetings, and other meetings as required.
• Additional duties as required.

Requirements

  • A university degree in Journalism, Communications, or a related discipline.

  • 2 to 5 years of experience in communications and/or journalism

  • Strong understanding of the hotel, travel and tourism industries considered an asset.

  • Possess the following strengths: high energy, proactiveness, strong attention to detail, excellent communicator and effective in providing exceptional customer service.

  • Ability manage internal and external relationships is required.

  • Experience with virtual and hybrid platforms required.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills are required, with an ability to work successfully with various organizational levels, whether that be with colleagues, senior executives, members, or partners.

  • Experience managing stakeholder issues and engaging key partners.

  • Ability to identify techniques to augment the creative effectiveness of marketing communications and program collateral. Ability to enforce brand standards across programs, ensuring consistency and adherence to the standards.

  • Keen understanding of news functionality and commitment to staying on top of developing stories as they relate to the political environment and the hotel, travel and tourism industries.

  • Strong research and deduction skills that will aid in identifying media and advocacy opportunities, using tools like Survey Monkey.

  • Experience monitoring and tracking media, including use of tools like Cision and Meltwater.

  • Proficiency with basic computer applications including Microsoft Office.

  • Familiarity with Squarespace, Member 365, WordPress, Canva, Constant Contact, considered an asset.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects and initiatives.

  • Some travel is required.


Salary/Wage

75, 000-$85,000
